A Note from Your President, Mark Diestler:
Greetings OASFAA Constituents!
There has been lots of planning going on behind the scenes for OASFAA this year: Budget Planning, Community Trainings, Summer Drive-In, 50th Anniversary Annual Conference, and so much more. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with some of the things we have in store.
For all the practicing aid administrators, big changes continue within our community:
- DRT taken offline, then administrative relief was added for verification (16-17 and 17-18).
- Year-Round Pell was reinstated beginning 17-18 (more guidance coming from ED soon).
- A hidden gem for 18-19 verification, which has 4 very important words added — 'except for dependent students' under confirmation of non-filing from IRS.
- Q: What does that mean?
- A: For 18-19, schools will no longer be required to collect IRS non-filing letters for dependent student who did not file and were not required to file a 2016 IRS income tax return. A signed statement (e.g. verification worksheet) and W2s, as appropriate, will be sufficient documentation. We will still need them for parents and independent students, but I know this is big news for our school and our population of students.
Our 50th Anniversary Annual Conference to be held January 31 — February 2, 2018 at the Salishan Resort, so please save the dates now, you are not going to want to miss this one! LOTS more to come on that.
The 2017-2018 Executive Council (EC) is looking for volunteers, so please update your volunteer preferences if you haven't done so already. Additionally, chairs and co-chairs are listed here: http://www.oasfaaonline.org/docs/toc_committees.html if you would like to reach out to anyone for additional information.
The EC plans on meeting: May 17, July 18, and October 24 at Chemeketa Community College.
